The original idea was a place to keep all the gardening tools and a quiet place to rest. <br> Constructing it was quite the adventure for both of us. An 8 X 10 patch of level ground was dug into the bank near the southeastern end of the grape vine. and a cement pad was laid with rebar reinforcing. at 8 different intervals, 4 pieces of rebar were bent to protrude up out of the concrete. These were the base for the pillars. Rebar was wire-formed together to make the 8 pillars, with the rebar bent again at the top. The rebar was covered in a 12-inch sonotube. and filled with cement. The pillars at the front were about 18 inches higher than the rear. 3 plywood forms were cut in the shape of the curvature of the roof, and held in place with supports. 1X4 planks were laid across this with a plastic sheet next. Rebar and chicken wire were then put in place. Using the sonotube cut in half, a gutter was cobbled around the perimeter. I mixed the cement, and James was on the roof pouring. 5 gallon pails of cement is heavy lifting. Once the cement had cured, the scaffolding supporting the roof was removed. Next were the walls, 4 inch Styrofoam insulation was cut to fit between the pillars. Windows were cut for 5 custom-made windows\/screens. (summer and winter) and one window that was from the old garage was incorporated. Wires were poked through the Styrofoam and 1\/4 in wire mesh covered both the inside and outside. A stucco specialist (Barry Head) was hired in to complete the stucco work. The complete structure was stuccoed grey on the outside and a cream colour on the inside. Wiring was installed from an underground supply from the mains panel in the garage. Interior lighting and a baseboard heater were installed. Also, water was supplied. A Dutch door was fitted, and the floor was laid using 1\/2 in thick end cuts of 4X4 cedar. I came up with this idea remembering a few of the old downtown streets in Vancouver were paved in cedar blocks. The blocks were soaked with tung oil and then covered in sand to fill the cracks. Once dry the excess sand was brushed out. The roof was covered in rubber pond liner and 4 inches of soil, then planted with grass seed and wildflowers. It has not leaked at all in 25 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The, what is now called the she-shed, was a whimsical concept conceived by my friend James Watt, the fellow who designed and built the garage for us.
